Summary
Pre-school period is the time when a child acquires first habits of using a library which can develop towards a permanent need for books and libraries. Direct goal of early inclusion of pre-school children into library is »development of a reader«, who likes books and finds much pleasure in visits of his library. That’ s why the role of mediators is so important: these are child’ s parents, educators and librarians. The library’ s role in developing reading skills is of great importance. After studying professional recommendations for libraries we discovered that pre-school children are not treated as a special group of library users. Professional recommendations do talk about the equal status of all library users, but according to the specific characteristics of pre-school population we expected that they were treated as a special group of library users. We wanted to find out if public libraries in Slovenia are properly organized for pre-school users, how they adapt to the needs of the young users who are not yet able to read and what kind of activities are being organized for them by sending out the questionnaire to all public libraries. The results of the questionnaire were: not enough pre-school children are library members and pre-school children are not treated as a special group of library users in public libraries in Slovenia. Libraries don’ t collect information about their number, they don’ t know how many pre-school children live in the area, they don’ t know how many pre-school members they have, how many they want to have and how many books they need for them. Libraries have many things to do in the future, but librarians have to realize how much they can contribute to the development of reading skills of pre-school children.

Popravila sem le nekaj manjsih napak, kar se tice krajsav, mpr. don’t = do not. Krajsave se navceloma ne uporabljajo v strokovnih textih. Sicer pa ti pr4dlagam “pravo” lektorira

Tudi jaz bi ti predlagala lektorja. Na forum se ne moreš kar tako zanesti. Ne poznam pa nobenega dobrega anglista, da bi to delal kar iz vselja, če ne gre slučajno za človekoljublne organizacije npr. Amnesty ipd.
